Sign up for the 30X30 Challenge!

Ontario Parks is throwing down the gauntlet and challenging us all to take the 30X30 challenge!

It’s an simple idea that we love: for 30 days, spend a minimum of 30 minutes in nature.

Living in Collingwood and the surrounding area should make this easy. We have The Bruce Trail, Georgian Bay, Wasaga Beach, Sunset Point, Northwinds Beach, the Arboretum, and plenty of other amazing natural treasures that many of us see every day, but rarely use.

Why get outside everyday? Many studies have showed that being in nature can increase mood, decrease anxiety and even decrease pain. Consider it our prescription for good health this summer. 🙂

Join the StoneTree team and get outside this summer–30 minutes for 30 days!

Get Cultured! The Basics of Fermented Food

Fermentation dates back thousands of years, and it’s present in the diet of almost every culture on earth. From kimchi in Korea and sauerkraut in Germeny, to kefir in Bulgaria, fermented food is surprisingly omnipresent. Even familiar foods you might find in any “average” North American home like like cheese, yoghurt, pickles and wine are fermented.

Our ancestors used fermenting to preserve food and neturalize toxins, but the process also had an enormous positive impact on our health.

Our “gut flora” is made up of hundreds of different types of good bacteria. These little critters are responsible for helping our immune system stay strong, providing us with the important vitamin K, and helping with detoxification. Fermented foods are filled with probiotics (beneficial bacteria), in amounts many times greater then any supplement you could take.

Join Naturopath Doctor Shelby Worts at Currie’s Farm Market here in Collingwood on Wednesday, August 5th, at 7PM for a fermented food workshop. You’ll learn two basic fermented food recipes, and discover how these foods improve your digestion, immunity and bone density, and help create a flatter belly!

Eat Your Way to Beautiful Skin

Join Dr. Kendra at Currie’s Farm Market, on Wednesday, July 8th at 7PM, as she explains which foods wreak havoc on skin and which ones are helpful.

From eczema to wrinkles she’ll cover it all! There will be samples of her favorite serums and creams to try, and lots of take-home tips.

See you there!

Help Us Protect Your Health Care Rights

We need your help! Please take a few moments to read this. Taking action (see below) is extremely easy and takes just minutes.

Over the last several years the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has been working with our profession to have Naturopathic doctors fully regulated under the Regulated Healthcare Practitioners Act. That’s the same Act that regulates health care professionals ranging from MD’s and RN’s to dentists and optometrists.

It has been a long and bumpy road and we are getting close.  However, your ability to access lab testing through your naturopathic doctor is currently in jeopardy.

Why This Is So Important

One of the most important tenets of Naturopathic Medicine is informed consent. We believe that patients have the right to make their own educated health care choices. This legislation threatens that. Here’s why:

1. Your right to choose your provider is limited. Lab tests you currently have access to through your naturopathic doctor will be limited in the new regulations. Tests for things like hormone levels, environmental toxins, specialized genetic testing or cancer markers may be completely unavailable to you through your ND. You should get to choose who provides your care.

2. Your right to frequency and test choice is limited. Your family doctor, and OHIP, may not want to test in the same way, or with the same frequency as you do. You should have the right to measure your own health care indicators whenever you choose and however you choose.

As an independent health care consumer, you should have complete control over what you pay for, and how you consume fee-for-service health care.

How You Can Help, Quickly and Easily

You can make a difference by doing one of the following 3 steps:

1.  Sign this letter (Word or PDF) and email it to [email protected] and cc [email protected]

2.  Come into the clinic and sign the letter and Dr. Tara will take it with her when she meets with Jim Wilson MPP, on May 21st, 2015.

3.  Meet with your MPP Jim Wilson yourself and let him know how important being able to access Naturopathic Medicine is to you.  Educate him on how you use ND services and how by doing so you take a burden off the health care system. You can book an appointment with him by calling 705-446-1090, or emailing [email protected]

Please tell all your family and friends who value the right to choose how they care for their health to do the same.

Let’s make sure you can continue to access the care you want, when you want, and how you want!

A New Seasonal Allergy Remedy

pascallerg-100-compresse-erbofarma-farmacia-omeopatiaLast year we showcased a little allergy remedy in the “Things We Love Section” of our newsletter. Lufeel is a very safe and very effective homeopathic remedy for seasonal allergies and hayfever that came in a tablet format and a nasal spray. This year, the maker of that remedy is no longer distributing in Canada, so we had a bit of a hole to fill.

Enter Pascallerg. We have given this new remedy to a few of you and are getting back some great reviews. As one patient said: “Excellent, it is better then the other stuff. It worked quickly, no yucky feeling and lasts 5 hours for sure”

Like Lufeel, Pascallerg is homeopathic and very safe to use in children, adults and pregnant women. It will not interact with medications or other allergy treatments, and does not have all the side-effects of regular antihistamines.

The remedy is available at our local health food stores and here at the clinic.

Bonus: If your seasonal allergies arrived later in life, or are worsening as you age, you might want to read this article, too…

A New Face (And New Rates!)

StoneTree would like to welcome our new student clinic intern Candice Soldaat to the team.

Naturopathic medical students complete an internship period where they see patients under the supervision of an experienced doctor in practice. Candice will be seeing patients under the supervision of Dr. Tara on Friday mornings, as part of her final year of training for becoming a Naturopathic Doctor.

This a great opportunity for your friends and family to not only support the growth of naturopathic medicine, but to access care at a reduced rate. If you know someone who’s been wanting to see an ND but hasn’t, this is their chance–new patient visits are just $75 and follow-up appointments are $40.

Contact the clinic at 705-444-5331 to book!

What Christmas Means to Us

Here’s what the StoneTree team is thinking about this Christmas…

“Christmas lights, the Grinch, tourtière, stockings full of wrapped presents, clementines, bubbles with canned peaches and an absolute belief in the “magic” of it. It is all the things that happen EVERY year no matter what that connect us as a family to all the generations that went before and all the ones to come.”
-Dr. Tara

“Family and food”
-Julie

“Christmas for me this year has been all about another baby. .. a little bundle of LOVE named Lauren Isabel Thomas..born to my daughter Brooke and Andy in Toronto on Nov 22nd….. Christmases from now on will be very special.”
– Barb

“Quality time with family. Strangers being more ready with a smile. Believing in Santa… the spirit of Christmas. Snowflakes. Soft lighting. Cozy evenings.”
-Dr. Shelby

“FAMILY! Christmas Eve we sit and write a love letter to each member of our family. Relaxing in PJ’s on the couch in front of the tree at my parents log cabin in the woods. Chevy Chase Christmas Vacation, smoked salmon, snow, nature walks.”
-Dr. Kendra

“Christmas is about the Joy of Giving. The exhilaration from gifts of love, time, helping hands, cooking, as well as those under the tree. The smell of pine needles, turkey and stuffing. The sounds of laughter and traditional songs filling our homes with warmth. To be surrounded by so much love from family and friends…enough to carry you through until the next time.”
-Lori

“The excitement, the anticipation, the overall warmth of generosity and human kindness in the air, and the sharing of family traditions with the next generation.”
-Lisa

With much love and best wishes to you and your family,
Merry Christmas from the StoneTree Clinic team.

It’s That Time! Using Your Remaining Benefits

For those of you with workplace benefits covering naturopathic medicine and other health services, now’s a great time to check to see if you have any unused coverage.

Most plans cover quite a wide range of StoneTree services, including:

  • Naturopathic consults–the appointments with your ND
  • Lab tests, like food intolerance analysis, blood tests, toxic metal screening, hormone testing, etc.
  • Treatments like IV therapies and colon hydrotherapy
  • Nutritional consults
  • Facial rejuvenation acupuncture with our resident skin wizard Dr. Kendra

There are still clinic spots in December to get it all done. Just contact the office at 705-444-5331 or [email protected] and we’ll organize it all!

Food Bank Drop Off

Once again the team at StoneTree clinic will be collecting items for our local food bank.

As many of you know, gluten-free products and dairy alternatives can sometimes be very expensive. Imagine needing assistance with food and also having a child with celiac disease or a dairy intolerance–it’s an overwhelming situation, and often food banks don’t have many contributions that fit those needs.

This year, as in the past few years we will be trying to focus our attention on stocking up our local food bank to support those families.

Of course, we are also happy to accept any donation. This great little article gives some wonderful suggestions on what food banks need and want but never ask for–things like spices, feminine products, socks, toiletries and soup packets are all greatly appreciated.

You can drop off your items at the clinic (115 Hurontario Street, Suite  200, Collingwood, ON) from Monday to Friday until Christmas Eve at 1PM.

Happy holidays to all,

The StoneTree Team
