A New Seasonal Allergy Remedy

pascallerg-100-compresse-erbofarma-farmacia-omeopatiaLast year we showcased a little allergy remedy in the “Things We Love Section” of our newsletter. Lufeel is a very safe and very effective homeopathic remedy for seasonal allergies and hayfever that came in a tablet format and a nasal spray. This year, the maker of that remedy is no longer distributing in Canada, so we had a bit of a hole to fill.

Enter Pascallerg. We have given this new remedy to a few of you and are getting back some great reviews. As one patient said: “Excellent, it is better then the other stuff. It worked quickly, no yucky feeling and lasts 5 hours for sure”

Like Lufeel, Pascallerg is homeopathic and very safe to use in children, adults and pregnant women. It will not interact with medications or other allergy treatments, and does not have all the side-effects of regular antihistamines.

The remedy is available at our local health food stores and here at the clinic.

Bonus: If your seasonal allergies arrived later in life, or are worsening as you age, you might want to read this article, too…

A New Face (And New Rates!)

StoneTree would like to welcome our new student clinic intern Candice Soldaat to the team.

Naturopathic medical students complete an internship period where they see patients under the supervision of an experienced doctor in practice. Candice will be seeing patients under the supervision of Dr. Tara on Friday mornings, as part of her final year of training for becoming a Naturopathic Doctor.

This a great opportunity for your friends and family to not only support the growth of naturopathic medicine, but to access care at a reduced rate. If you know someone who’s been wanting to see an ND but hasn’t, this is their chance–new patient visits are just $75 and follow-up appointments are $40.

Contact the clinic at 705-444-5331 to book!

What Christmas Means to Us

Here’s what the StoneTree team is thinking about this Christmas…

“Christmas lights, the Grinch, tourtière, stockings full of wrapped presents, clementines, bubbles with canned peaches and an absolute belief in the “magic” of it. It is all the things that happen EVERY year no matter what that connect us as a family to all the generations that went before and all the ones to come.”
-Dr. Tara

“Family and food”
-Julie

“Christmas for me this year has been all about another baby. .. a little bundle of LOVE named Lauren Isabel Thomas..born to my daughter Brooke and Andy in Toronto on Nov 22nd….. Christmases from now on will be very special.”
– Barb

“Quality time with family. Strangers being more ready with a smile. Believing in Santa… the spirit of Christmas. Snowflakes. Soft lighting. Cozy evenings.”
-Dr. Shelby

“FAMILY! Christmas Eve we sit and write a love letter to each member of our family. Relaxing in PJ’s on the couch in front of the tree at my parents log cabin in the woods. Chevy Chase Christmas Vacation, smoked salmon, snow, nature walks.”
-Dr. Kendra

“Christmas is about the Joy of Giving. The exhilaration from gifts of love, time, helping hands, cooking, as well as those under the tree. The smell of pine needles, turkey and stuffing. The sounds of laughter and traditional songs filling our homes with warmth. To be surrounded by so much love from family and friends…enough to carry you through until the next time.”
-Lori

“The excitement, the anticipation, the overall warmth of generosity and human kindness in the air, and the sharing of family traditions with the next generation.”
-Lisa

With much love and best wishes to you and your family,
Merry Christmas from the StoneTree Clinic team.

It’s That Time! Using Your Remaining Benefits

For those of you with workplace benefits covering naturopathic medicine and other health services, now’s a great time to check to see if you have any unused coverage.

Most plans cover quite a wide range of StoneTree services, including:

  • Naturopathic consults–the appointments with your ND
  • Lab tests, like food intolerance analysis, blood tests, toxic metal screening, hormone testing, etc.
  • Treatments like IV therapies and colon hydrotherapy
  • Nutritional consults
  • Facial rejuvenation acupuncture with our resident skin wizard Dr. Kendra

There are still clinic spots in December to get it all done. Just contact the office at 705-444-5331 or [email protected] and we’ll organize it all!

Food Bank Drop Off

Once again the team at StoneTree clinic will be collecting items for our local food bank.

As many of you know, gluten-free products and dairy alternatives can sometimes be very expensive. Imagine needing assistance with food and also having a child with celiac disease or a dairy intolerance–it’s an overwhelming situation, and often food banks don’t have many contributions that fit those needs.

This year, as in the past few years we will be trying to focus our attention on stocking up our local food bank to support those families.

Of course, we are also happy to accept any donation. This great little article gives some wonderful suggestions on what food banks need and want but never ask for–things like spices, feminine products, socks, toiletries and soup packets are all greatly appreciated.

You can drop off your items at the clinic (115 Hurontario Street, Suite  200, Collingwood, ON) from Monday to Friday until Christmas Eve at 1PM.

Happy holidays to all,

The StoneTree Team

No More HST on Naturopathic Care!

14061007_sHooray! Great health care just got more affordable. The 2014 federal budget exempted naturopathic doctors’ services from HST and GST. It’s about time. 🙂

The changes take place immediately–you’ll notice a difference (the good kind!) in your bill for your next consult.

“Naturopathic doctors are, indeed, primary healthcare providers. They integrate standard, medical diagnostics with a broad range of therapies”, said Dr. Pat Wales, ND, Chair of the CAND. “Having patients pay taxes on essential primary health care services didn’t sit well with our members, or our patients, and we are pleased that the Government of Canada agreed”.

You can read the rest of the press release from our national association here.

This is all part of a larger change for naturopathic medicine as we complete our transition into the Regulated Healthcare Practitioners Act–the same act that governs medical doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, and more.

28 Days of Gratitude

11769520_sLast year I set a New Years resolution about happiness. I committed to myself that I was going to focus on daily happiness for 365 days.  When I started on January 1st, I really had no idea how I was going to do that. How the year evolved turned out to be quite interesting.

On January 1st I started a journal and committed to writing in it every night. I started the exercise with rating my happiness in several aspects of my life–things like family, work, health, and money, to name a few. I gave each category a score out of 10 and for every category that wasn’t a 10/10 I would write down actions that could be taken to make it a 10/10.

This carried on for a month or two and then my journal entries started to change all by themselves–focusing less on changing the things I was unhappy about and more celebrating all the things that I was happy about. By the end of the 3rd quarter the entries were just about being grateful in general for everything in my life. What was interesting that even on my most crabby, cold and PMS-y days, when I would go to bed and write down at least three things I was grateful for that day, I would get a complete state change, going to bed happier and more contented.

The more I was focused on being grateful, the happier I got, the more connected I felt to others, and the more fun I had.  2013 turned out to be a BLAST!!!

The 28 Days of Gratitude Challenge

This winter has been a hard one to be happy in. The February “blues” are going to be in full swing this year so we’ve decided to embark on a 28-day challenge that might just help. Here’s what the team at StoneTree is going to do.

Starting Feb 1, we’ll write down each day at least three things we are grateful for on that day. It can be in the morning, before bed, with lunch–it doesn’t matter, as long as it happens everyday. That’s it!

We’d love you to join us! We challenge you be grateful, in writing, every day. Don’t forget to rate your happiness from 1-10 in all of these areas the day you start:

1.   Self
2.   Work
3.   Relationship/Marriage
4.   Family/Kids
5.   Finances
6.   Health
7.   Friends/Community/Social
8.   Overall

Put you scores away for 28 days where you won’t see them, and then rank yourself again at the end of the challenge. Let us know how you did and if they changed.

Happy February everyone!!

What’s Happening to My Skin?

9796653_sShort days. Low light. Dry air. Pale skin. Less time outside.

Welcome to the time of year when we start to lose our healthy summer glow, and our skin seems to lose some of its magic, too.

Winter is hard on the skin. But it’s not just the weather–as you age, circulation to your skin decreases, and the resulting reduction of oxygen and nutrients hampers your body’s ability to flush out toxins & excess fluid (puffiness). This is what drives premature aging and causes the skin to develop a dull, ashen appearance.

Dr. Kendra has added a new tool called mesotherapy to her anti-aging services. It’s an effective, non-invasive treatment for facial rejuvenation, that ‘wakes up’ the body’s own healing response and stimulates microcirculation. It consists of tiny injections of small doses of medicines or homeopathic remedies into the mesoderm layer of the skin to nourish, rejuvenate, and promote the production of collagen and elastin.

It’s very effective for dull, aging skin, sun damaged skin, fine lines & wrinkles, acne scars and even alopecia (hair loss). After treatment, patients commonly describe their skin as looking glowing, rested, and firmer.

Mesotherapy can be used in addition to, or as an alternative, to many anti-aging regimens, including conventional treatments like botox, laser resurfacing, peels, topical creams and facelifts.

28 Days of Health Challenge

18349551_sThe StoneTree Docs were sitting around discussing what three habits, if done every day, would have the most profound impact on health?

Here’s what we came up with: daily exercise, drink enough water and avoid refined sugar.

After we agreed on the three things, which took all of three minutes, we asked each other if we actually did them daily.

Ah, cruel reality.

Now, we’re pretty good at walking the talk here, but when push came to shove, we couldn’t truthfully say that we did all of these things daily.

Enter the 28-Day Challenge.

Starting Friday, Oct 25, 2013, for the next 28 days, Dr. Tara, Dr. Shelby and Dr. Kendra are committed to:

  1. Exercising daily for a minimum of 30 minutes. This can be any type of exercise–walking, running, yoga, working out, classes, biking–so long as it is sustained. And no, you may not do 60 minutes one day and have it count for the next day. Each day is a minimum of 30 minutes.
  2. Drinking the appropriate amount of water daily. What is the appropriate amount of water? We’ll be using the benchmark of half of your body weight in pounds, in ounces. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you’ll need to drink 75 ounces. With 8ozs to a cup, that works out to 9.4 cups. For every cup of diuretic (aka caffeinated beverage) you need to add an extra cup.
  3. Avoiding processed sugar, which means refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Fruit is good. Honey is good.  Maple syrup, agave, stevia–all good. Just none of the nasty white stuff. Muffins? Not good. Pop? Nope. The little Halloween candies? Definitely not. If it has “sugar” in the ingredients list, it’s out. Period.

Want to join us? We encourage you to do so! Tell your friends, your mom, your hubby–take them all along for the ride and let us know how you do. Look for regular blog posts on our progress. We’ll be posting where we’re having trouble and tips for success along the way.

Just 28 days might be all it takes to create your new habit!
